Well, it's certainly been quite of a ride. Not a bad season at all, but I hope they can address the problems that I did have with it. I give this season of Supergirl 3 stars out of 5. Why 3? See for yourself.
Mon El was Dead Weight 99% of the Time The writers didn’t utilize Mon El correctly. I can see why the writers sent him off of Earth in the finale; they didn’t know what else to do with him aside from him being one-comic-relief-too-many, getting pimp-smacked by various villains (his mother included), making hash brown for Kara, & being the son of the main villain of the season. He saved a kid once, other than that, his presence was meaningless & unnecessary. If they had written the innocent bystander kid out of that 1 episode, he’s entire presence would have been 100% meaningless. With just the slightest of tweaks, he could have simply not been there at all with no change to the main plot-line events. Kara could have literally had a human boyfriend & the same exact story would have taken place. Mon El only succeeded in slowing the show down for me. I hope that when he finally returns to the show, he comes back with an actual plot, fighting skills, & is able to participate in big fights where he doesn’t get immediately owned. Great Action, but Clunky at Times Don’t get me wrong, there were great Supergirl fights, awesome Guardian fights, & an epic Supergirl vs. Superman fight in the finale! But, uh, well, I have a some minor gripes to address… At the beginning of the episode called Resist (episode 2x21), that was totally improbable that Alex wouldn't get shot by those alien guards during the siege at the D.E.O. She sprinted past them for like 20 yards or more & then up those steps. That was fake. Anyone that ever tried that in a video game knows that would have resulted in a “Game Over” screen before ever clearing the steps, unless it was set on easy mode. Also, I'm a bit tired of enemy soldiers having the aim of old school Stormtroopers.
In the episode called Distant Sun (episode 2x17), Martian Manhunter was in the middle of wiping the floor with the Daxam royal guard, & suddenly went onto his knees, right on cue as a member of the royal guard held a staff to his neck. That part looked so fake & lazy both direction-wise & fight choreography-wise. Check it out at time frame 32:54 - 33:04, & judge for yourselves.
Mon El proved time & time again that he can’t even fight, but in the episode called Nevertheless, She Persisted (episode 2x22), he suddenly starts fighting with an alien staff like he’s Black Widow in Avengers. I was like "WOW! That came out of nowhere & made absolutely no sense." This episode was the finale of the season. Well, better late than never I guess -- it still made no sense. Why show episodes where he's training, & screwing up during training, only to be like "Oh, yeah! We forgot to tell you guys: Sometime between the end of episode 21 & the beginning of episode 22 Mon El got really good at fighting! SURPRISE, EVERYONE!!!!!" Alex’s Budding Romance Look, I’m an action guy. I certainly don’t watch this show for the romantic element. It’s ok when it’s done properly. Meaning, having non-stupid events happening in the relationship. With that said, I could do without Alex throwing Maggie a Valentine’s Day party for 2, when she clearly said she didn’t want one. Ugh… LEARN 2 RELATIONSHIP, DANVERS!
Final Verdict I really feel that this season could have been 4 star material because I really like & appreciate this show, but with the weak addition & misuse of Mon El, I simply couldn't do it. They could have done SO MUCH with him. What a waste. Oh well, there's always next season, or whatever season they decide to bring him back to Earth in. I give this season of Supergirl 3 star out of 5. ★★★★★
